Aleksanterinkatu 32 – The Historic Bio Espis Cinema
Located at Aleksanterinkatu 32, this former wooden cinema building is a unique part of Kaskinen’s architectural and cinematic heritage. The building was designed by Väinämö Killinen, a Finnish architect and engineer captain, and the original drawings are dated November 1940. The building has retained the original character of the cinema and its distinctive auditorium structure.
Regular film screenings began in Kaskinen as early as 1924. E. Ratilainen later commissioned a new cinema building in the town after deciding to invest his lottery winnings in culture and cinema. Bio Espis became an important part of the town’s leisure activities and shared film culture.
The building still contains analogue cinema equipment, including two Dresden D11 film projectors, standard and wide-angle lenses, as well as film rewinding and splicing equipment. The property has an active electricity connection and is connected to the municipal water and sewer systems.
The building is surrounded by a sheltered garden plot of approximately 1,300 square metres. The garden contains red and blackcurrant bushes, damson plum trees and an apple tree.
During the Fair
Visitors can explore the historic cinema building, the auditorium, the analogue projection equipment and the original architectural drawings dated November 1940. The site offers an interesting opportunity to learn about the history and construction of an old wooden building, as well as its future renovation possibilities.
The building is in need of renovation. The known repair needs concern, among other things, the roof structures, heating system, roof penetration, chimney, exterior cladding, doors, stairs and exit safety. The seller’s statement does not provide a complete description of all renovation needs.
