Suutarinkatu 8 – Historic timber house and Former Office

This beautiful timber house was built in 1909 as the home and office of merchant Elis Sylvin. Designed and built by Gustaf Rosenlöf, it is a fine example of Kaskinen’s building heritage. The house reflects the style and stories of its time – and its eventful history.

The house has experienced much: it was bombed during the Winter War (traces can still be seen in the attic), and the outbuilding burned down along with the cows. The current outbuilding was rebuilt after the wars. The house is said to have also served briefly as a seamen’s mission and has for much of its life been divided into two apartments. It is now used as one unified home.

From the outside, the house looks large, but the living space is only 129 m² on one floor – the attic is unheated space. The garden was once said to be the most beautiful in Kaskinen, and the aim is to gradually bring it back to life.

The current owners bought the house at the end of 2024. The house was in good condition, and previous owners had already done some renovation. The restoration continues with traditional methods and in an environmentally friendly way – slowly but with the hope that the result will last for decades.

The site is open during the official opening hours of the fair

Special programme: The owners will share the history of the house and its renovation. Visitors can go up to the attic to look for traces of the bombing.
