Old Boathouse at Kalaranta – Traditional Craftsmanship in Action
The old boathouse at Sjöbobacken, located opposite the Fishing Museum, is participating in the Wooden House Fair with a unique live demonstration of traditional building techniques. During the fair, the building’s old wooden shingle roof will be renovated, giving visitors a rare opportunity to see how a traditional shingle roof is constructed.
The work is led by Lars-Erik Hannus, an experienced specialist who has restored numerous shingle roofs over the years, including those of the historic church stables at Närpes Church and many other heritage buildings. He will also share knowledge about the use of birch bark as a roofing material and provide advice on traditional restoration methods.
At the same time, Lilja Öhman will be preparing traditional red ochre paint according to an old recipe at Sjöbobacken. The paint will be cooked on Saturday, allowed to cool, and may be available for purchase on Sunday.
All activities are weather permitting.
